I study the fluid dynamics of planetary atmospheres, with a focus on Earth’s global atmospheric circulation. I study how the basic ingredients - a rotating sphere with a thin layer of gas around it, differential solar radiation flux and other physical processes – create the richness of the dynamical phenomena observed in the atmosphere. In particular, my research focuses on jet streams, which are bands of fast winds flowing in the direction of the planet’s rotation, and on their interaction with weather systems that transport heat and moisture around the planet. In my research I use a combination of observational data analysis and numerical modeling to better understand the dynamics of the atmosphere.
